Description
Nomination Whist is a game with a long and distinguished history. Thought by some to be the fore runner of Bridge, it became popular across Europe and America in the 18th and 19th centuries, (it was a favourite of Jules vern's character Phileus fog), and is still widely played today. in particular, one key advantage is that unlike Bridge it is far easier to understand and play.
As with Hearts or Spades, the game revolves around the principle of taking tricks, with each of the four players playing a card to a trick, and the highest card in the suit that started the trick winning that trick, and the player who won the trick getting to start the next trick. In addition, each round one suit is declared trumps, meaning any cards played of the trump suit automatically win each trick they're played to, though of course a player can only play a trump suit if they don't have any cards of the trick's original suit.
In Nomination whist, each player is dealt 13 cards and before play begins players must predict how many tricks they will get with those cards and the current trump suit. If a player fails to make the number of tricks they bid, they score nothing, where as getting more tricks than predicted will give them one point for each trick. The real skill however is getting exactly the number of predicted tricks, at which point the player earns one point for each trick plus a 10 point bonus. When the hand is finished, players are dealt 12 cards each and another round of bidding happens, followed by another hand, then each player is dealt 11 cards and so on, with the player with the most points after 13 hands the winner. This makes Nomination Whist a complex and strategical game, both in making your own bids and in stopping other players from achieving there's, as well as trying especially hard to scupper those with more points than you.
As you would expect, Bg nomination Whist is in some ways similar in it's interface and options to BG Hearts in that it contains three computer opponents, large and colourful graphics which may be maximized, and outputs all it's text to MS sapi. There are also various keys for looking through your cards and some helpful sound affects such as a beep whenever you get to the trump suit. In addition, you can choose a couple of options for the game including choosing whether there is a round of no trump or whether there is always a trump suit, whether trumps are determined at random or cycle between the four suits and no trump, and whether bids should be allowed to exactly equal the number of tricks meaning that it would be possible for all players to make their contracts or not In addition as with all the games in the BG series, you can play midi music during the game as well.
Of course one other respect in which BG Nomination whist is like all the other games made by Ian humphries is that it is completely free, so if your looking for a strategic and predictive game there's no reason not to give this a try.
Happy trumping.
