Description
Talking word puzzles is intended to provide access to various sorts of grid based word puzzles in large print and speech, and thus provide access to these for blind and visually impaired gamers. Talking word puzzles can be used to either create or play crossword, word search or hidden word puzzles.
In a word search, the player is provided with a grid of random letters, and needs to find words hidden horizontally or vertically in that grid, while in a hidden word puzzle, some of the letters of words in the grid might be blanked out and must be filled in by the player. In a crossword of course, most of the letters in the puzzle are blank and clues of increasing levels of fiendishness are provided to hidden words.
Despite it's ability to play three different types of games, the interface for Talking word puzzles is the same. Move around the grid with the arrow keys and hit enter to start entering letters. Hitting tab will go to a list of clues, or of words that need to be found to finish the puzzle.
The program comes with several puzzles, but it also has the ability to enter puzzles manually, thus letting people create and share their own puzzle files. It can additionally print out or emboss puzzles if you want a hard copy off computer. A mailing list also exists to let people share created puzzles or discuss the program, to join, send a blank E-mail to mailto:talkingpuzzles-subscribe@topica.com
As well as large print, the program also outputs to ms sapi, or can be run with a screen reader, and also contains various amusing sound effects to make solving puzzles more interesting, though these can be disabled from the program's menue if you wish.
The free version of Talking word puzzles can be played for as long as you like, but will cut out after 15 minutes, which won't let you have time to solve a puzzle. To register the full version costs $39, or $49 if you want to order it on CD.
Happy Puzzling!
